Did you know that there is a Life Insurance Registry under the Ministry of Justice where you can check if you are a beneficiary of a life policy? During 2020, almost 135,000 people discovered that they were beneficiaries of life insurance by making a simple consultation.
In addition, there were nearly 167,000 consultations that submitted a negative certificate. In total, more than 305,000 consultations, 81,000 more than in 2019, representing an increase of 31.2%.
Life insurance doesn’t save you, but it helps a lot for those you leave behind.
2020 has been a devastating year in many ways. Also a year in which we have been able to learn many things. One of them has been, without a doubt, to discover the certainty that there are many things that can happen and that none of us are free.
Many people are reluctant to take out life insurance, for many reasons. Many consider it a waste of money. It is also money thrown away that is played in the lottery, but what joy it gives when it touches, right?
And although joy is not the right word to define what someone feels when they know that one of the beneficiaries of life insurance, knowing that you are going to receive that financial aid helps to cope better with the drink. Some will say that the penalties with bread hurt less; But for many the problem is the opposite: sorrows without bread hurt much more. Because when you are the main breadwinner of your family, or an important pillar of the family economy, leaving everything at the mercy of the public pension is, to say the least, challenging.
How to know if I am a beneficiary of life insurance
To know if you are a beneficiary of life insurance you have to request the Certificate of Insurance Contracts of death coverage. This document accredits the current contracts in which the deceased person appeared as insured and with which entity the policy is subscribed.
If the deceased person does not appear as insured in any contract of this type, this circumstance will also be indicated on the certificate issued.
It should be borne in mind that this certificate only refers to insurance with death coverage and accident insurance that covers the contingency of the death of the insured, whether it is individual or group policies.

Issues to consider
A first issue that must be taken into account is that the data of the Registry of Insurance Contracts of Death Coverage will be available for a period of 5 years from the date of death. This makes sense, since, after 5 years, it is no longer possible to claim compensation for life insurance.
On the other hand, it must be taken into account that at least 15 days must have passed since the death of the person on whom you want to make the consultation.
Finally, it should be noted that the application for this certificate must be made through Form 790. This model can be downloaded free of charge on the website of the Ministry of Justice and the Territorial Managements of the Ministry of Justice. The application costs just under 4 euros. In addition, it should not be forgotten that it is necessary to present the Literal Death Certificate (original or certified photocopy) issued by the Civil Registry corresponding to the locality in which the person died, and in which the name of the parents of the deceased must necessarily be stated.
